2nd Sunday after Easter             30th April  2006

Dear Friends,

At one time a crude distinction was made between Catholics and Protestants based on Word and Sacrament.  It was said that, whilst Christians of the Reformation emphasized the bible and preaching, Catholics concentrated on the Mass or Eucharist.  Such a caricature no longer holds up.  Ever since the Second Vatican Council forty years ago, the place of Scripture has assumed paramount emphasis in the worship and catechesis of the Catholic Church.  In today's Gospel we read:  "He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures".  So it is, that every weekend at Mass we hear excerpts from both Old and New Testaments.  Every homily is to be soundly grounded in Scripture and, in the time allowed him, every preacher is to deliver a clear message drawn from what has been read.  Our own Bishops have recently published a document entitled "The Gift of Scripture" which invites us to make the reading of and reflection upon Scripture an integral part of our lives.  In this regard we do well to ask ourselves one or two questions.  How familiar am I with the Bible?  Do I appreciate that Our Lord is present to us in His Word?

Please pray for Mrs Margaret Johnson, one of our Eucharistic Ministers, who died in her sleep last week.  Fr. Bill will preside at her Requiem at 1.30 p.m. on Friday 5th May.  R.I.P.

God Bless you  all,       Father James.
