17th Sunday of Ordinary Time                                                        30th July 2006

Dear Friends

The Gospel of St. John differs in may ways from those of Mark, Matthew and Luke. One of the most obvious differences is the total absence of any reference to the Eucharist in John's account of the Last Supper. However, John has a rich theology of The Eucharist which he expounds at length in Chapter six. Every Sunday from now until the end of August we shall hear excepts from that sixth Chapter, encouraging us to reflect upon Jesus as the Bread of Life. The scene is set in today's reading about the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. Jesus, in this incident, satisfies physical hunger as a prelude to satisfying our spiritual needs in the Eucharist. The Eucharistic readings of the coming weeks will also help us to focus on the Forty Hours of Adoration which will be taking place again at the end of September.

During the holiday season let us pray for the safety of all travellers. Let us also take the opportunity of the slower tempo of life to recharge our batteries spiritually as well as physically.

God Bless you always,
Fr. James
